Tony Natsoulas Documentary

Thanks to the Festival of the Arts that took place in April, I got the opportunity to watch a documentary directed, filmed, and edited by Benjamin Fargen entitled "Tony Natsoulas: A Face in the Crowd". Tony Natsoulas is a Sacramento/Davis ceramics artist who studied under Bob Arneson at UC Davis. The film included lots of interviews with people near and dear to the artist that detail special moments or works in his life. This film was very obviously a labor of love for both the artist it is about and the director. One of the moments that I found very interesting from the film was the day they were moving one of his pieces from the old K street mall to a new home. I have always really enjoyed that sculpture and was very happy to have found that it has a new home still here in Sacramento. Another highlight from the film was getting to see some of his pieces from his Barococo series that was shown a few years ago at the Crocker Art Museum. This series of  portraits were larger-than-life portraits of people in the artist's life. The movie itself had interviews from Tony Natsoulas' friends and colleagues that were included in this series. It was very touching to hear from the people who have been inspiring and supporting his career as an artist. Honestly, I went into this event knowing only that Tony Natsoulas was a local artist. I came out knowing that Tony Natsoulas is an important local and international artist who has created a lot of beloved works celebrated by the people of Sacramento.
